Natural Childbirth Alternatives Include Hypnobirthing Are Effective

Since the beginning of mankind a woman has given birth in a natural setting, without the use of drugs or any other medical intervention techniques meant to ease the pain and discomfort while "having a baby". This was mainly because there were no appropriate medicines available for the midwife who was usually in attendance. There was also a fear of doing harm to the baby. Once hospitalization became popular and modern medications became available, along with testing which showed them safe (more or less) for the unborn child, a large majority of pregnant women chose drugs to help them get through the often painful process of delivery. Recently there has been a resurgence in the popularity of midwifery and when assisted by a trained and well qualified midwife childbirth need not be something to fear nor be a painful procedure.

Natural childbirth offers alternative methods for comfort

More recently there was a movement toward more natural birthing, and women appreciated the choices available to them. Among the more popular methods of birthing in a natural way are hydrotherapy, breathing exercises, water birth, use of a birthing ball, hypnosis, hot and cold therapy with compresses, and acupressure. Each of these pain management styles or techniques can be taught while attending natural child birthing classes. What may work well for one woman may not be as helpful for another however and most of it involves some form of mental training such as mindfulness (thinking in the moment or devoting one's entire concentration onto one specific task as with delivery of the baby). Women can talk themselves out of much of their pain by practicing one of the techniques and rehearsing with a birthing partner (husband or midwife).

Hypnosis becomes popular alternative now known as hypnobirthing

Hypnosis has become a popular method of natural child birth and women who have their first child using this method find they have no fear and little pain (if any at all). The practice of hypnobirthing is now considered a proven effective method of going through the labour process without fear. Many women who are pregnant for the first time and fearful, or have had a bad experience in the past, now feel that having that baby with assistance from hypnobirthing is the only way to go. All women may not find the process entirely pain free but will definitely experience less pain and because they are more relaxed, the labour and delivery will be far quicker, thus easier on both mother and child. And hypnobirthing can be incorporated into other natural birthing methods such as changing position or even standing and climbing stairs to induce her labour.

Faster birth often means less medical procedure intervention

When the labour and birthing process happens smoothly and efficiently there is far less probability that medical intervention will be required. Such procedures as an episiotomy (cutting the perineum to prevent tearing) or instrumental assistance to deliver or even a C-section can be prevented through the total relaxation of the mother without the use of drugs. Any time drugs are given to the mother before her child is delivered and the cord cut, there is an opportunity for those medications to enter the baby's blood stream and potentially cause harm.

HypnoBirthing is a technique that has worked for thousands of couples preparing for the birth of a new baby, whether first time parents or not. Plan a Hypno birth for your next child now.

Chiropractic Manipulation Compares With Surgery As an Effective Sciatica Treatment

ByBrad Woodle

Sciatica refers to pain or dysfunction involving the sciatic nerve in the lower back and legs. Symptoms may include tingling or a burning sensation, weakness, numbness, and pain. The symptoms begin in the lower back and commonly travel down the back of the thighs, calf muscles, and even into the feet. People usually experience sciatica symptoms down one side but can experience it bilaterally. Symptoms are secondary and caused by other primary conditions such as a herniated disk in the lower back that is pressing on the sciatic nerve.

Sciatica pain is often caused by a temporary inflammation or overuse of the low back, which irritates the nerve. In these instances, pain will usually subside on its own as long as you take care of your back. Your doctor or chiropractor may recommend an over the counter anti-inflammatory, ice for the first 48 hours then heat, and gentle activity for a few weeks until the symptoms subside. Chiropractors recommend avoiding extremes-no bed rest and no heavy lifting.

Chronic sciatica is pain or dysfunction that lasts more than six months. Most often, chronic sciatica is due to a herniated or bulging disk in the lower back due to overuse or an injury. Other causes of sciatica may include tumors, Piriformis syndrome, or a trauma to the pelvis. If you experience fever, redness or swelling of the back, problems urinating, or severe pain, call your health care provider immediately.

When chronic sciatica is a result of a non-life threatening condition such as a herniated disk, doctors recommend the most conservative treatment first. Surgery can be effective but there are risks and higher costs associated with surgery as opposed to more conservative treatments such as injections, physical therapy, and chiropractic care.

A recent study on the effectiveness of chiropractic care for sciatica showed that chiropractic spinal manipulations were equally as effective as surgery (microdiskectomy) in treating sciatica. The study in "Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics" reported "sixty percent of patients with sciatica who had failed other medical management benefited from spinal manipulation to the same degree as if they underwent surgical intervention."1 Further, surgery for sciatica can cost up to $25,000 and involves the risks associated with invasive surgery. When compared to the average 21 chiropractic sessions at $100 ($2,100) to treat sciatica, this is a savings of $22,900.2

The researchers concluded that spinal manipulations performed by a chiropractor proved to be an effective and cost efficient treatment for sciatica. Patients with sciatica due to a herniated disk should consider treatment by a chiropractor before surgery. Chiropractic manipulations have proven to successfully relieve sciatica without the need for surgery in many instances. For patients that do need to proceed with surgery, the study found that patients who delayed surgical treatment and tried chiropractic care first experienced no negative effects.

Chiropractors are whole body practitioners and work within the body's natural healing abilities. If treated by a chiropractor for sciatica or a herniated disk, your rehabilitation may include any combination of physiotherapy treatments including spinal manipulations, heat and ice therapy, electric stimulation, ultrasound, massage, and rehabilitative exercises.
